- 1851 / 1881 / 1891 census returns
- Checked 1871 census return for 28, River Street, Islington as shown on daughter's
BC, but found no trace of KNOWLTON family.
- Checked 1841 census return for address shown on his BC, but found no trace of KNOWLTON
or BROWN families.
- Found James C. KNOWLTON aged 52 in 1891 census return at 64, Goodinge Road, Islington.
Daughter Alice was not recorded because she married in 1887.
- The 1891 census return shows his wife as "Susan", born in South Molton, Devon, not
Mary. Perhaps Mary had died by this time and he had re-married, or that this is the
wrong family.
- To help confirm that this is the correct family, the BC for son George (aged 20/22?)
was sought, but unsuccessfully. Being of a similar age to Alice, his mother must
also be Mary.
- The reference to the BC for daughter Mary Jane was located (vol.1b page 272). This
will confirm if her mother was Mary.
